How often do you consider privacy or security when sending an email? Most of us assume the only person on the other side of an email is the intended recipient, but there's no guarantee. It's possible for email messages to be intercepted or stored on servers that fall foul of weak data privacy laws. Your email provider usually wants a portfolio of personal information before you can open an account, and even then they can access every message you send or receive.ProtonMail is an email platform that's been designed with strong security and privacy practices in mind. Every message sent between ProtonMail users is automatically encrypted and decrypted on the fly. Known as end-to-end encryption, this ensures your message cannot be intercepted by third parties. The company is based in Switzerland, where privacy laws fall outside of EU jurisdiction. And since ProtonMail is a Swiss company based in Switzerland, they do not have to submit to requests for information from U.S. agencies either. The country's famously strict privacy laws also protect companies like ProtonMail from having to implement backdoor access. To quote the company: "only a court order from the Cantonal Court of Geneva or the Swiss Federal Supreme Court can compel us to release the extremely limited user information we have."Even if your friends don't all use ProtonMail, you can still send and receive encrypted messages. The easiest way to do this is to enable server-side encryption, where your recipient is sent an email notifying them of a message in waiting. By following a link in the message, the recipient can decrypt it with a password before the message eventually expires. It's also possible to use PGP with ProtonMail, which can be enabled under Security > External PGP Settings. This allows you to communicate with other security-enthusiasts who are using different providers.ProtonMail doesn't require any personal information for you to create an account, which means no identifying information is stored or related back to your account. The company even refuses to keep any IP logs in a bid to maintain absolute anonymity. As for physical access to the company's servers? ProtonMail is hosted in Europe's most secure datacenter, beneath 1,000 meters of granite, in a nuke-proof bunker.ProtonMail doesn't seek to replace your everyday email account but instead provides a secure safety net for anyone concerned about sending unencrypted sensitive information via the likes of Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook.
